A Beacon of Real

“Does not wisdom call out? Does not understanding raise her voice?” – Proverbs 8:1

A blog post about wisdom (truth).

I was listening to sports talk the other day about a football player declared eligible to play after being suspended indefinitely for gambling at 3 different colleges. As each guest on the panel expressed their opinions, a former NFL Super Bowl winning quarterback offered what he felt the coach’s response should be:

“So, let me ask you a question because here’s the part of it that no one will talk about, what does this say about the coach? If you don’t stand for something, you fall for everything/anything, that’s what my Daddy used to tell me. Because I feel in chaos, commitment to doing things the right way can change the entire narrative. What a message to send to your team, what a message to send to college football, to say, we wish this player the best, but we don’t run that type of program here, we feel that we can stand on value, we can stand on our morals, we can be a light in a landscape of darkness. Think about the leverage he would have if he stands on business…it puts him in a position where he could be the beacon of real.”

The part that no one will talk about…

Recently, Cindi and I took a trip to Grand Rapids, MI to see Rick Renner, an amazing bible teacher, who along with his family, has been ministering in Russia for over 30 years. Between the morning and evening services, we decided to drive through the downtown area, but first we googled coffee!

Our phone map took us to a café located in a residential neighborhood just on the edge of the downtown area, we could see the buildings a few blocks from where we parked in front of someone’s house.

We walked in… the feel inside said it belonged in this part of town. We enjoyed our coffees to the backdrop of laughter coming from a table of young people. As we sipped and looked out the side window, we saw children selling lemonade and playing. Across the street, a taco stand with lots of people coming and going. “Bet it’s good,” Cindi said and after all, we were hungry!

As I reached for the door to leave the coffee shop, I came face to face with Post-it Notes, a lot of them. As a matter of fact, the different color papers filled the windowpane immediately to the right! Looking closer, I saw handwritten notes on each one, Love, You Are Strong, God is good all the time, You are Worthy!, Your worth and beauty lies beyond measures in Gods eyes, and more.

Wonder why I only noticed the notes on the way… out?

Both the sports talk show and coffee shop encounter reminded me that wisdom, understanding and “the part that no one will talk about,” is everywhere, not bound by our ability or willingness to hear it or see it.

“To you, O people, I call out; I raise my voice to all mankind.” – Proverbs 8:4

By the way, what would you write on one of those Post-it Notes?
