Is there ever enough?
We have all experienced the reality and feelings of not being enough. Strong enough, good looking enough, wealthy enough, experienced enough… The list seems to be never ending at times.
So, when is enough, enough?
The apostle Peter must have grappled with these doubts and emotions, a fisherman thrust into what became the greatest movement in history. The Book of Acts records how right after Pentecost, Peter and John healed a lame beggar, “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I do give you,” Acts 3:6. Then, for their kindness, this miracle got them a night in jail and an audience with the religious rulers and scholars of the day.
What would Peter say? Would he be eloquent enough? Bold enough?
“The next day the rulers, the elders and the teachers of the law met in Jerusalem. Annas the high priest was there, and so were Caiaphas, John, Alexander and others of the high priest’s family. They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you do this?”
Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: “Rulers and elders of the people… It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed…Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus.” Acts 4:5-13 NIV.
What Peter and John had was a relationship with Jesus, they knew him. Peter was filled with the Holy Spirt. This empowered Peter and John, ordinary men, to leave the religious leaders astounded.
Of all we can do, say, learn or possess, Jesus makes it enough, and more is found in no one else.
We… ”pray that our God will make you fit for what he’s called you to be, pray that he’ll fill your good ideas and acts of faith with his own energy so that it all amounts to something,” 2nd Thessalonians 1:11 & 12 MSG.
