“The truth is always quiet. It’s the lies that are loud.” – Kay Smith in the movie “Jesus Revolution.”
Dion starts his day early.
As the overseer charged with preparing breakfast at the Holiday Inn Express downtown Washington DC, Dion has a big job. The hotel has multiple floors, a large lobby and adjacent room where people from all walks of life gather to begin the morning.
After finishing our own busy, but good, season, Cindi, Christian and I traveled to Washington DC to rest and experience our nation’s history. Christian had never been, Cindi and I went together when we were first married some 35 years ago, and I remember traveling with the men from our church at the time to a gathering of Promises Keepers.
Cindi booked us at the Holiday Inn Express to have close access to the Bible Museum, Capital, and related sites. This also gave us a front row seat to “life in the city.” We arrived late in the afternoon the first day. After grabbing some pizza and observing a young girl speak to someone about Jesus on the street, we made our way to the Capital. We were off to a good start.
The next morning, when we headed downstairs for coffee and breakfast, it was already bustling with activity. We first noticed Dion while standing in line. As he engaged the guests and instructed the staff, it was obvious that he took his job seriously, standing over the service area as if to say, “I am here to ensure that everything is just right.”
We sat down in the lobby to eat, thinking of the sites that we were planning to see. Over my shoulder, someone began to speak. It was Dion.
When checking out, we thanked Dion for his boldness and encouragement. He told us that it is something in his spirit that he needs to share with others. He further explained that the neckless he wore was given to him by a woman in despair that was changed when hearing him speak.
“If there is anything I can do to make your stay more pleasant, please don’t hesitate to let me know, because that’s what I’m here for. When you came in our doors you were greeted with a smile and when you leave you will be greeted with a smile. So today I say, pay it forward, pay it forward.”
In other words, “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in love. Honor one another above yourselves,” Romans 12: 9&10.
That is what we are all here for.
What a great start to the day.
